A study on the Inpatient¢¥s Satisfaction with Nursing Care for Evaluation of Nursing Care Quality

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to contribute to improvement of the quality of nursing care, determining the inpatient¢¥s level of satisfaction with nursing care through investigating the . nursing situation.
The subjects for the study were 207 inpatients over 16 years old, who had been hospitalized for 3 days. They were selected from one secondary, general hospital in Seoul during the period from Oct. 20 to Nov. 2, 1993.
Data were collected from the subjects, using questionnaires which consisted of the
patient satisfaction scale developed by La-Monica et. al, in 1986. The scale consists of 41 items covering 3 subscales technical-professional area, trusting area and educational area.
The Data were analyzed by the SPSS Computer program using percentages, means, standard deviations, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The results of this study were as follows
1. On the level of satisfaction with nursing care by the inpatients.
The average degree of inpatient¢¥s satisfaction was 3.880. It showed a high level of satisfaction.
The highest in 3 areas of nursing was trusting area with 3.934, the second educational area with 3.855, and the third technical-professional area with 3.821.
2. On the comparison of the degree of satisfaction with nursing care according to general characteristic of the inpatients
In all areas of nursing activity the satisfaction degree showed a significant difference according to the demographic characteristics of age, marital status, religion and monthly income, and the admission-related characteristics, such as the department to which the patient was admitted and the nursing helpers.
For age, the higher the age, the higher the level of satisfaction (r=.1777, p<.0l). For marital status, the satisfaction level of married patients was higher than that of unmarried patients (t -2.04, p<.05). For religion, the satisfaction level of religious patients was higher than non-religious patients (t=2.22, p<.05). For monthly income, the higher the monthly income, the lower the level of satisfaction (r=-1216, p<.05). For the department, the satisfaction level of neurosurgery patients was higher than that of other departments¢¥ patients (F=3.788, p<.005). For-nursing helper, the satisfaction level of with-nursing helper was higher than that of without-nursing helper, but not so with employed- nursing helper.
In conclusion, of 3 nursing areas the satisfaction level of the inpatients was highest in the trusting area, and was lowest in the technical-professional area.
Accordingly, for nursing care quality is needed to develop refined Nursing Standard towards nursing goal. Besides the evaluation instrument should be developed including hospital facilities, personnel resources and environment, not to mention of ordinary nursing activities.
